The best Moscow mule cocktail

The Crossan Court Custom- Moscow Mule Cocktail Recipe by Heretic Spirits

Despite where its name suggests it originated, the Moscow Mule was created in the US in the early 40s when the owner of a vodka company and the owner of a ginger beer company were both struggling to sell their products. They decided to combine their efforts and resources, making their drinks the centrepiece of an inspired new cocktail with an incredibly distinct and unique flavour profile. The Moscow Mule was born and became immediately recognizable at Hollywood parties in its iconic copper mug. We added a splash of cranberry juice to cut the spice of the ginger beer, so you can enjoy this historic cocktail with a tart twist.

The History of the Moscow Mule

As we’ve previously mentioned, the popularity of vodka in North America was able to rise to new heights in the 21st century because of the spirit’s inherent versatility. In this context, the versatility of a spirit is based on how well it pairs with an array of different flavours. More specifically, how well can the alcohol disguise itself into a cocktail with the addition of fruits, sugars, and citruses? Vodka is able to do this exceedingly well and because of that, it opens a door to mixing cocktails with far more subtle flavours – a huge step in making drinks more palatable to the public.

However, there now seems to be a shifting of the tides. The same people that grew accustomed to vodka cocktails as light and refreshing are now experienced enough drinkers to demand more from their drink of choice. Rather than opting for the easy, breezy summertime sipper, our patrons are looking to incorporate bolder flavours into their cocktails. We are happy to oblige.

When considering the classics throughout vodka history, there may not be a recipe with as intense and unique a flavour as the Moscow Mule. Few other cocktails have the confidence in their flavours to rely on ginger spice so dominantly. The Mule is strong, spicy, and smooth with a bubbly finish that leaves you wanting more; an absolute vodka essential served ice cold in the coolest mug available. With an iconic and unmistakable look and a flavour to match, the Moscow Mule is once again a rising star.

We added a healthy splash of cranberry juice to help develop the flavours even further. The tartness of cranberry adds a delicious new layer to this cocktail, but not so much as to be overpowering. The added sugars in the juice help to cut the unique heat of the ginger, creating the Crossan Court Custom, a simple and spicy cocktail to enjoy any time of the year.

To match your cocktail, we recommend a food pairing that’s just as light in texture and heavy in flavour. Our choice is fish tacos. Pan fry some well-seasoned pickerel and serve it with mango salsa, guacamole, and of course, hot sauce. All wrapped up in a small tortilla with a fresh squeeze of lime, this culinary combo will make you feel like you’re sitting on the beach, no matter how frightful the weather gets outside.
